There is trust, but not nearly to the same degree. I haven't personally audited the code of either, but that's not a reason to go "well really running Linux is no different than running Windows when it comes to privacy/backdoors, because you're still trusting someone at the end of the day". It's easier to be confident that there's no backdoor in my OS when I run Linux than when I run Windows. It's a spectrum between black box proprietary and open source software.
